Treatment Necessities

While treatment methods are discussed in detail elsewhere, it is important to emphasize certain key factors when seeking an electrologist. The following are the very basic requirements for safe, permanent hair removal:

  • Probes — Electrolysis requires the use of a needle or probe.  During the course of looking for an electrologist, some providers may indicate that they practice blend or galvanic treatment but use a "no probe" skin method instead.  In our observation, these "no probe," also called transdermal methods, do not provide permanent hair removal.

  • Disposable Needles — Electrolysis needles, also called probes, are relatively inexpensive and have a limited life.  Their re-use requires sterilization, re-packaging, and proper storage.  Re-use is not an acceptable solution.

  • Proper Hygiene — Use of disposable gloves along with a clean, hygienic, and orderly environment are necessary for good treatment techniques.

  • Transgender Treatment Methods — Understanding of the specific treatment methods and techniques used to permanently remove (kill) male beard hair.

  • Pain Control — Availability and the basic understanding in the usage of topical pain relievers (over the counter or physician prescribed).

  • After-effects Control — Extensive electrolysis will likely produce significant after-effects, including persistent inflammation and irritation, along with the possibility of infection. Availability and the basic understanding in the usage of topical antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication, and related techniques are essential to proper treatment.
