Androgens, Oral
This medicine is a male hormone prescribed when the hormone is not
produced naturally by your body. It is also used to stimulate
puberty, treat certain breast cancers in women, and stop lactation
(milk production) in women who are not breast-feeding after
childbirth.
Use by athletes to improve muscle strength is not recommended.
Proper Use
Take this medicine exactly as directed. Do not take more of it or
take it longer than directed.
Certain forms of this medicine (buccal tablets) are not swallowed.
Follow your doctor's instructions for using buccal tablets. Do not
miss a dose, and do not take double doses.
Please Note
Your doctor may want to see you regularly to check your progress.
Long-term use of this medicine, especially in large doses, may
cause enlargement of the breasts in men and growth of facial hair
in women. If you have one of these problems, contact your doctor.
Diabetics: This medicine may affect your blood sugar level and
change the amount of insulin or other diabetes medicines you may
need. Talk to your doctor about this.
Possible Side Effects
Serious (report these to your doctor right away): Yellowish eyes
or skin, dark urine, black or very light bowel movements, sore
throat, fever, bloody vomit, red spots on your skin or in your
mouth.
Other: Constipation, diarrhea, stomach pain, trouble sleeping.
Important: Other side effects have been reported in both men and
women. Report any ill effects to your doctor right away.
Tell your doctor if you have any side effects that continue or get
worse.
Possible Drug Interactions
When you take this medicine with other medicines, it may increase
or decrease the effects of the medicines. Or the combination may
cause harmful side effects. Some medicines that may interact with
this medicine are:
- blood thinners
- insulin or other medicines for diabetes
- steroids or ACTH.
Be sure that you tell all doctors who treat you about all medicines
you are taking, including nonprescription products.
