Ammonium Lactate, Topical

This medicine is used to treat itchy and scaly skin caused by either xerosis (dry skin) or ichthyosis vulgaris. It comes in cream and lotion forms.

Proper Use

This medicine is usually applied to the skin twice a day. Rub it in gently but thoroughly. If you have the lotion, shake it well before using it. Use this medicine carefully on your face because it may irritate your skin. Do not get the medicine into your eyes, nose, or mouth.

Please Note

Do not expose your skin to the sun or sunlamps while you are using this medicine. Wear protective clothing and a hat if you need to be outdoors.

This medicine may cause stinging or burning when applied to broken skin or to skin that has been shaved recently.

If your condition becomes worse while you are using this medicine, stop using it and contact your doctor.

Do not use this medicine on children unless your doctor approves.

Females of childbearing age: Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding an infant.

Possible Side Effects

Serious (report these to your doctor right away): Increased irritation of your skin.

Other: Rash, stinging, burning, itching.

Tell your doctor if you have any side effects that continue or get worse.

Possible Drug Interactions

No significant drug interactions have been reported. However, do not use strong soaps, abrasive products, or irritating cosmetics on the areas of the skin being treated with this medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about this.

Be sure that you tell all doctors who treat you about all medicines you are taking, including nonprescription products.
