Topotecan Hydrochloride, Injection

This medicine is given by IV infusion (slow drip through a needle into a vein) to treat cancer of the ovaries when other treatment has failed.

Proper Use

Your doctor or nurse will give you these infusions during each of the first 5 days of a 21-day period (a treatment course). Four or more courses of treatment may be necessary. Your doctor may also prescribe injections of a medicine called growth factor. The growth factor medicine helps your body replace its white blood cells, which this medicine (topotecan) destroys. Keep all appointments for your injections so that your treatment is as effective and safe as possible.

Please Note

Your doctor will want to test your blood frequently to check on how this medicine is affecting you. Keep all appointments for blood tests.

Females of childbearing age: Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding an infant. Do not receive this medicine if you are pregnant because it may harm the baby. Do not become pregnant and do not breast-feed an infant while receiving this medicine.

Possible Side Effects

Serious (report these to your doctor right away): High fever, severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, infection, bruising, bleeding.

Other: Headache, abdominal pain, constipation, loss of hair (temporary), loss of appetite, muscle or joint pain.

Tell your doctor if you have any side effects that continue or get worse.

Possible Drug Interactions

When given with this medicine, cisplatin (Platinol) cause side effects that affects your blood. Talk to your doctor about this.

Be sure that you tell all doctors who treat you about all medicines you are taking, including nonprescription products.
