This educational site has been made possible through contributions by Dr. Carl Bushong and associates of the Tampa Stress Center, a private practice group that had provided health care services for over 25 years.

Tampa Stress Center has maintained throughout its tenure, counseling services and support surrounding the inevitable adjustment issues of gay, lesbian, and transgender lifestyles.

When Dr. Carl Bushong formed Tampa Stress Center, one of the first stress management facilities in the country, our services included counseling psychotherapy, biofeedback, hypnotherapy, and specialized relaxation techniques.  Tampa Stress Center was responsible for developing one of the first computer integrated and interactive electromyography (biofeedback) devices put into clinical use, and developed strategies for computerized administration and scoring of traditional psychometric instruments (psychological testing).

We later provided transgender-based educational topics to other mental health professionals as a Florida licensed Psychological Services Continuing Education Provider. The educators of Tampa Stress Center, in part, are responsible for helping others to better understand and accept the unique life-style issues faced by what has since been termed the transgender community. Our services grew to include transgender medical, counseling, and electrolysis/permanent hair removal services, providing a Florida licensed electrology facility on the premises. Specifically tailored for the transgender male to female patient, electrology services were performed under medical direction and operated by a nationally certified electrologist, providing prescription topical anesthetics and nitrous oxide gas analgesia for maximum pain control, along with the often overlooked benefits of anti-infective/antibiotic medications. These combined efforts had formed the basis of the Tampa Gender Identity Program (TGIP).

Since the new millennium, we have developed the TransGenderCare web site in order to offer our repository of educational and informational offerings freely to the transgender community worldwide. The TransGenderCare website will continue to grow into a well rounded educational offering supported by the staff of the Tampa Gender Identity Program as well as other affiliated transgender health care professionals worldwide.
